KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has initiated an investigation into a Facebook post suspected of containing content insulting to Islam by mocking a verse from the Quran, authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
The regulatory body has been examining the social media material following complaints from members of the public. The MCMC said it is assessing whether the post violates provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Investigations of this nature typically examine whether online content breaches laws prohibiting the transmission of obscene information or material deemed offensive to religious beliefs. The MCMC has reminded the public of their responsibility when sharing content on social platforms.
Malaysia's approach to religious sensitivity remains strict under both federal and state laws. Previous cases involving alleged religious insults on social media have drawn swift regulatory action and public scrutiny.
The commission has urged social media users to exercise caution and respect when discussing religious matters online, noting that individuals can face legal consequences for posts deemed offensive to Islam or other faiths.
