MCMC probes Facebook over livestreamed teacher assault in Kuching

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is examining how Facebook failed to block the livestream of an assault on an educator in Kuching, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said on Wednesday. The investigation seeks to determine whether the platform violated its obligations under Malaysian communications law regarding real-time harmful content.

Fahmi said the MCMC is working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and assess Facebook's response protocols. The regulator is examining whether adequate safeguards were in place to detect and remove such content before it reached a wider audience.

The incident underscores persistent concerns about social media platforms' capacity to manage harmful material broadcast live, which presents particular challenges for content moderation systems. Authorities have previously expressed concerns about the inadequacy of automated detection tools in preventing violent content from being distributed during live events.

The investigation comes amid broader regulatory efforts across Southeast Asia to hold technology companies accountable for content moderation failures. Malaysia has increasingly scrutinized social media companies' compliance with local laws designed to protect public safety and prevent the spread of harmful material online.
