The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has removed 170,000 scam-related posts and content from online platforms, reflecting the escalating threat posed by internet fraud to Malaysian consumers and businesses.
Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching highlighted the scale of the challenge, noting that the removal figures demonstrate the pervasive nature of online scams in the digital landscape. The minister stressed that the mounting volume of fraudulent content necessitates sustained and coordinated enforcement efforts across multiple platforms and jurisdictions.
The MCMC's enforcement operations target various categories of online fraud, including investment schemes, phishing attempts, impersonation scams, and fake product advertisements. Authorities have intensified monitoring and removal procedures to respond swiftly to reports of fraudulent activity.
The regulator continues to work with telecommunications providers, social media platforms, and law enforcement agencies to identify and eliminate scam-related content. Officials have urged the public to report suspicious online activity and exercise caution when engaging with unsolicited messages or offers online.
Malaysia has seen a significant uptick in cybercrime complaints in recent years, prompting authorities to allocate additional resources to digital fraud prevention and public awareness campaigns.
