KUALA LUMPUR — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has removed 56,304 instances of fake online content since 2023 as part of its broader campaign against digital misinformation, according to a deputy minister.
The regulator submitted 66,568 removal requests to various online platforms during the same period, demonstrating the scale of false and misleading material circulating across Malaysian digital spaces. The efforts represent a significant enforcement operation aimed at protecting the public from fraudulent content and unverified claims.
The MCMC's actions form part of Malaysia's multi-faceted approach to tackling online disinformation, which has become an increasingly pressing challenge for authorities and society. The commission works with social media platforms and other digital services to identify and remove content that violates local regulations and standards.
Officials have previously emphasized the importance of combating fake news and misleading information to maintain public trust in institutions and protect citizens from potential harm. The removal figures underscore the persistent nature of the problem and the ongoing resources required to address it effectively.
