PUTRAJAYA, Oct 22 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued a stern warning to the public against sharing video content related to a violent incident at a school in Kuching, cautioning that circulation of such material may violate telecommunications laws.
The regulator urged individuals who have already distributed or viewed the footage to refrain from further propagation of the content. The MCMC emphasised that the sharing of such videos could constitute an offence under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, potentially exposing those responsible to legal action.
The incident, which involved a teenager, has prompted the commission to remind the public of their responsibilities when handling sensitive content online. Authorities have advised that sharing graphic or violent material—particularly involving minors—carries serious legal implications beyond the initial creation of such footage.
The MCMC's intervention reflects growing concerns about the rapid spread of sensitive content through social media and messaging platforms in Malaysia. The commission has previously taken action against similar instances of harmful video distribution, emphasising the importance of digital responsibility among users.
Members of the public with information regarding the video's distribution or origin are encouraged to report the matter to the MCMC, which continues to monitor online activity for breaches of multimedia communications regulations.
