Meaningful dialogue key to averting authoritarianism, self-interest: official

Consultation mechanisms rooted in Islamic principles of shura offer a pathway to more sound and inclusive decision-making, according to a senior official addressing governance challenges in the region. The emphasis on structured dialogue helps counteract tendencies toward authoritarianism and the prioritisation of personal interests over collective welfare, he noted. The Wawasan secretary-general pointed to how traditional consultative practices can be adapted to modern governance structures, enabling stakeholders to participate meaningfully in matters affecting their communities. By institutionalising dialogue across institutions, societies can reinforce democratic values while building consensus on critical issues. The official underscored that such mechanisms strengthen social cohesion by creating space for diverse perspectives to be heard and integrated into decision-making processes. Properly implemented consultation frameworks, he argued, serve as safeguards against concentrated power and ensure that governance remains responsive to broader public interests rather than narrow factional concerns.
