A 10-member medical board informed Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court yesterday that retired Major General Suresh Sallay could be safely discharged from hospital care. The board's assessment clears the way for the former State Intelligence Service director to leave Colombo National Hospital, where he has been receiving medical treatment.

Following the submission of the medical report, Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris indicated to Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena that Sallay would be remanded into the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department. The development marks a significant procedural step in the case against the former intelligence official.

Sallay, who previously headed the State Intelligence Service, has been at the centre of investigations relating to national security matters. The court's decision to allow his discharge from hospital custody follows established protocols whereby detainees receive medical clearance before custody arrangements are modified.
