Meghalaya MLA Says Party Legislators Negotiating With BJP
A ruling coalition legislator from Meghalaya has publicly acknowledged that members of his party are in discussions with the Bharatiya Janata Party, while his party leadership has distanced itself from the claim. The revelation has sparked fresh speculation about potential political realignments in the northeastern state.

Suin, the legislator representing Mawsynram constituency, stated on Friday that legislators from his party are maintaining contact with the BJP and have conveyed specific demands during these communications. His comments have brought to the surface ongoing discussions within Meghalaya's political establishment regarding possible party switches and coalition adjustments.
The admission contradicts the official position taken by Suin's party, which has denied the existence of such negotiations or suggested they lack formal authorization. The denial indicates a disconnect between individual legislators and the party's central leadership on the matter.
Such developments have become increasingly common in Meghalaya's fractious political landscape, where coalition governments have historically remained vulnerable to defections and realignments. The state has witnessed multiple instances of legislators switching allegiances or negotiating with rival parties, often creating instability in the ruling dispensation.
The BJP has been systematically expanding its presence in northeastern India over recent years, and Meghalaya has emerged as a potential target for expansion. Political analysts note that any significant defection from the ruling coalition could substantially alter the balance of power in the state assembly.
