The Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has formally recognised the merger of three United Democratic Party (UDP) members into the National People's Party (NPP), consolidating the ruling coalition's strength in the state legislature.
The three legislators transitioning to the NPP are Paul Lyngdoh representing West Shillong, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar from Mawkyrwat, and Nujorki Sungoh from Mowkaiaw. They will now occupy their assembly seats as NPP members, reflecting a significant realignment within Meghalaya's political landscape.
The move comes as part of ongoing efforts by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to consolidate the NPP's legislative strength in Meghalaya. The defections underscore the dynamic nature of coalition politics in the northeastern state, where smaller parties frequently negotiate political alignments with larger regional and national formations.
The recognition by the Speaker formalises the transition and updates the party composition in the 60-member Meghalaya Legislative Assembly. Such mergers are subject to constitutional provisions governing defection and require official validation to alter a legislator's party affiliation within the house records.
The UDP, which has traditionally held several seats in the Meghalaya assembly, faces further erosion of its legislative presence following these defections. The development reflects the continuing consolidation dynamics within the state's multi-party political ecosystem.
