Mehbooba Mufti, president of the Peoples Democratic Party, has voiced strong opposition to a proposed motorable boulevard project on the western side of Dal Lake, one of Kashmir's most significant water bodies and tourist destinations.
Mufti raised concerns about the impact of the infrastructure project on the ecological integrity of the region, particularly Nigeen Lake, which adjoins Dal Lake. She argued that preserving the environmental character of these water bodies should be the priority for policymakers and administrators in the valley.
The PDP chief framed the debate beyond infrastructure considerations, suggesting that the project represents a broader conflict between development priorities and conservation needs in Kashmir. She emphasized that the valley requires ecological protection rather than initiatives that could disrupt the natural environment and the tranquillity that defines these lakes.
Dal Lake, spread across approximately 22.36 square kilometers, has historically served as a crucial ecological resource and cultural symbol for Kashmir. The lake sustains local communities through tourism, fishing, and agriculture, making environmental degradation a matter of significant concern for residents and political leaders.
Mufti's statement reflects ongoing tensions in Kashmir regarding the balance between modernization and environmental preservation, with various stakeholders offering differing perspectives on development projects in sensitive ecological zones.
