Mehbooba welcomes BRICS terror attack condemnation, decries selective outrage

Mehbooba Mufti on Monday welcomed the BRICS bloc's condemnation of the terror attack in Pahalgam but cautioned against what she termed "selective outrage" in global responses to civilian casualties. The former J&K chief minister argued that suffering inflicted on civilians must not be evaluated through differing political or moral frameworks based on geography or geopolitical interests.

"Civilian blood has no nationality, and international justice cannot have double standards," Mufti said, drawing a parallel between the Pahalgam attack and civilian casualties reported in conflict zones including Gaza and Iran. She underscored that the suffering of non-combatants should command equal concern and condemnation regardless of where such incidents occur.

The remarks reflect growing concerns within Indian political circles about inconsistent international responses to terror attacks and armed conflicts. Mufti's statement suggests that while multilateral acknowledgment of the Pahalgam attack is welcome, it must be accompanied by uniformly applied humanitarian principles and accountability mechanisms across all regions experiencing civilian harm.

Her comments come as security forces continue operations in Kashmir to counter militant activities. The Pahalgam area, a popular tourist destination in south Kashmir, has witnessed sporadic terror incidents over recent years.
