MeitY calls on social media firms to tackle misinformation swiftly

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has pressed social media and digital platforms to strengthen their efforts in identifying and removing misleading content, particularly during periods of civil unrest and organised demonstrations.

In communications with major platforms, MeitY has outlined a multi-pronged approach to combating misinformation. The ministry has recommended that platforms implement prominent labelling systems for disputed or unverified claims, provide contextual information to users, and launch awareness campaigns highlighting the risks of spreading false narratives.

The directive stresses that all platform interventions must remain within the framework of the Information Technology Act and the Information Technology Rules, ensuring that content moderation practices align with existing regulatory requirements. MeitY has emphasised that swift action is essential to prevent the rapid proliferation of false information that could escalate tensions during sensitive periods.

The move reflects growing concerns about the role of digital platforms in amplifying unverified claims during public agitations. Officials have indicated that while protecting free expression remains paramount, platforms must balance this with their responsibility to prevent the spread of content that could incite violence or communal discord.

The ministry has indicated it will monitor platform compliance with these recommendations and may issue further guidance based on implementation outcomes.
