Melaka police retirees receive aid package, call for dedicated portfolio

MELAKA — A coalition representing retired and former police officers in Melaka received RM300,000 in aid on Monday, marking a recognition of their contributions to the state's law enforcement sector.

The financial assistance was distributed to multiple retiree and former police associations operating within Melaka, addressing immediate welfare needs among the veteran officers. The allocation represents the state government's commitment to supporting those who have served in policing roles.

Beyond the immediate aid, the associations have formally proposed that Melaka establish a dedicated state portfolio responsible for retiree welfare and veteran affairs. According to the coalition, such a dedicated position would ensure more consistent and comprehensive support for former officers, addressing long-term challenges including healthcare, financial security, and social integration.

The groups argue that a specialized portfolio would streamline administrative processes and provide retirees with a single point of contact for assistance programmes. They contend that dedicated oversight would improve coordination between various government departments handling retiree-related matters.

The proposal comes as retirees nationwide face mounting pressures related to pension adequacy and access to medical services. Melaka's retiree associations hope their initiative will serve as a model for other states to consider similar structural arrangements.
