Melaka schools stay open during haze; outdoor activities face curbs

All schools under Malaysia's Ministry of Education in Melaka state will remain open during the current haze episode, authorities confirmed on Friday. The decision to keep educational facilities operating follows established protocols that balance air quality concerns with the need to maintain regular classroom instruction.

Outdoor activities, including physical education classes and sports events, will be restricted if the Air Pollution Index (API) exceeds 100, indicating unhealthy air conditions. Schools have been instructed to monitor API readings closely and shift such activities indoors or postpone them as needed to protect student health.

The move aligns with standard operating procedures adopted across Malaysia during transboundary haze events. School administrators are required to keep parents informed of any activity adjustments and ensure students remain indoors during periods when air quality deteriorates significantly.

Melaka residents are advised to monitor official air quality updates and take appropriate precautions during high pollution episodes. The Ministry of Education has urged schools to maintain adequate indoor air filtration where available and continue providing regular health advisories to students and staff.
