Melania Trump has brokered a temporary halt to hostilities in Oleshky, a ravaged city in the Russian-occupied Kherson region of southern Ukraine, to facilitate the delivery of critical humanitarian assistance and enable the evacuation of civilians from an area facing acute humanitarian crisis.
The First Lady became involved in the negotiations after learning about the dire situation in Oleshky during an event held in September at the UN General Assembly in New York. Working through officials from both countries, she initiated talks that ultimately led to Friday's agreement among Ukrainian, Russian and US representatives.
According to the White House, Trump and a representative worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to establish the terms and conditions of the localised ceasefire. The agreement is scheduled to commence the following week, providing a window for aid organisations and Ukrainian authorities to reach trapped civilians in the conflict-torn city.
Oleshky, situated in southern Ukraine's Kherson region, has endured significant destruction throughout the ongoing conflict. The ceasefire represents a rare diplomatic breakthrough in efforts to provide relief to civilian populations caught in active war zones.
