Meralco to raise power rates in October as generation costs climb
Manila Electric Co. will implement a kilowatt-hour rate increase this month, pushing up electricity bills for residential consumers across the metropolis. The adjustment reflects rising generation expenses in the power grid.

MANILA — Meralco announced Tuesday that power rates will increase by P0.3191 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in October, attributable to higher generation costs. The rate adjustment will add approximately P64 to the monthly electricity bills of residential customers consuming 200 kWh of power.
The Philippines' largest power distribution company cited elevated generation expenses as the primary driver behind the monthly rate adjustment. Under the country's retail electricity price structure, such cost pressures are typically passed through to consumers in incremental rate updates.
Residential customers represent a significant portion of Meralco's consumer base in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces. The utility regularly adjusts rates monthly to reflect fluctuations in generation, transmission, and distribution costs, providing a pass-through mechanism that insulates the company from prolonged cost volatility.
Meralco serves approximately 7 million customers across its franchise area, making rate adjustments a closely watched indicator of energy cost pressures affecting households and businesses throughout the region. The company is required to provide advance notice of rate changes to customers and regulatory authorities.
