Mercedes-Benz India bets on plug-in hybrids for affluent buyers

Mercedes-Benz India views plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) as a promising interim technology for India's luxury car market, according to company CEO Santosh Iyer. The executive noted that affluent customers are increasingly willing to pay a premium for models that combine the benefits of electric and combustion powertrains while mitigating concerns associated with full electrification.

"Each powertrain has its pros and cons," Iyer said in comments on market trends. "A plug-in hybrid balances both worlds. You get electric range for everyday driving to your office and back, while still having the flexibility of a combustion engine if charging infrastructure is unavailable."

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Hybrid Maybach exemplifies this approach, offering approximately 100 kilometers of all-electric range alongside traditional petrol-powered capability. Iyer emphasized that PHEVs address persistent customer concerns about charging infrastructure limitations and range anxiety that have constrained pure electric vehicle adoption in India.

Plug-in hybrids typically command a 5-6 per cent price premium over comparable fully electric or conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, reflecting the added technology and consumer preference for flexibility. Iyer indicated that this pricing positioning, combined with superior resale value retention compared to battery electric vehicles, makes PHEVs an attractive proposition for India's luxury car buyers during the energy transition phase.
