Merchants Targeted by Surge in Fraudulent UPI Payment Schemes
A growing wave of fake Unified Payments Interface transactions has put retail traders on high alert across Indian states. Recent incidents involving jewellers underscore the vulnerability of merchants to digital payment fraud.

Merchants are increasingly falling prey to fraudulent UPI payment schemes, with authorities documenting a sharp rise in cases over recent months. The scam typically involves customers using fake or intercepted payment confirmations to purchase goods without actually transferring funds, leaving sellers with inventory losses and no recourse.
The problem has surfaced across multiple regions, affecting traders in various sectors. In one recent case, two silver merchants in Muvattupuzha fell victim to such fraudulent transactions, highlighting how even experienced retailers can be caught off guard by the deception.
The modus operandi generally involves sophisticated use of payment confirmation screens or messages that appear authentic but lack actual fund transfers. Victims often discover the fraud only after delivering merchandise or services, by which time the perpetrators have disappeared.
Trade associations and merchant bodies have urged customers and fellow traders to adopt stricter verification protocols before completing transactions. Recommendations include requesting additional identification, confirming payments through bank portals directly, and maintaining detailed transaction records. Authorities have also advised merchants to report incidents promptly to enable tracking of organized fraud networks operating across state lines.
