Inter Miami climbed to second in the MLS Eastern Conference after a 2-1 away victory over New England Revolution on Wednesday, with Argentine superstar Lionel Messi proving decisive in the latter stages of the match. The win marks Inter Miami's 10th road victory this season—a tally that exceeds any other team in the league by three matches.
New England broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute when midfielder Daniel Gazdag capitalized on defensive contributions from teammates Ilay Feingold and Peyton Miller to fire past goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair. The goal was Gazdag's second in 11 appearances this season, while it represented a career-high assist for both Feingold and the 18-year-old Miller.
Inter Miami equalized in the 69th minute through German Berterame, who benefited from a combination play involving Messi and Telasco Segovia. The strike marked Messi's first goal contribution in three matches and added to Berterame's impressive first MLS campaign tally of 10 goals and 10 assists. Messi subsequently sealed the victory with what proved to be the match-winning goal.
Inter Miami now holds a one-point advantage over New England in the conference standings. Inter Miami's record stands at 16-6-11, while New England remains at 18-11-4 heading into the final week of the regular season.
