Meta has confirmed that a technical malfunction within its systems caused the wrongful suspension of WhatsApp accounts across Malaysia, according to a statement from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The social media giant took responsibility for the error, which affected a number of legitimate users who found their accounts suddenly inaccessible without justification.
The company stated that the suspensions were not the result of users violating WhatsApp's terms of service, but rather stemmed from an internal technical failure in its account management systems. Meta indicated that it has begun the process of identifying and restoring all affected accounts in Malaysia.
In response to the incident, Meta has pledged to review its systems and implement additional safeguards to prevent similar technical errors from occurring in the future. The company assured users that it takes account security and access seriously and is working to rectify the situation promptly.
The MCMC, Malaysia's telecommunications regulator, said it would continue to monitor Meta's efforts to resolve the matter and ensure that Malaysian users are not subjected to further unjustified service disruptions. The incident highlights the importance of robust quality control measures for major technology platforms serving millions of users in the region.
