Meta has reported removing 5.3 million pieces of child sexual abuse material from its Indian operations during the first half of 2026, as part of a broader global enforcement effort. Across Facebook and Instagram worldwide, the company actioned 33.2 million such items during the same six-month period, with the vast majority—over 97 per cent—identified through proactive detection systems rather than user reports.
The company's latest enforcement figures underscore the scale of child safety challenges facing major social media platforms. Meta's automated systems, powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning, continue to play a central role in identifying and removing prohibited content before it reaches users or spreads widely across the platforms.
In response to ongoing concerns about child exploitation in digital advertising, Meta has introduced new AI-driven tools designed to monitor and prevent the misuse of advertisements. These tools aim to identify and block ads that could facilitate or promote child abuse, adding another layer to the company's multi-pronged approach to safeguarding minors.
The technology company has stated its commitment to balancing user privacy with child protection, working alongside law enforcement agencies and child safety organisations. Meta regularly publishes transparency reports detailing its enforcement actions, though child safety advocates continue to call for greater accountability and transparency in how platforms detect and respond to abuse material.
