Meta Platforms has dismantled a network of misleading advertisements on its social media platforms that weaponized adult content to ensnare Indian users in banking fraud schemes. The removed ads, which appeared across Facebook and Instagram, deployed sexually explicit imagery and promises to lure unsuspecting victims into downloading malicious applications.
The scam operated by directing users to download apps ostensibly offering adult content or gaming services. Once installed, these applications granted attackers access to banking credentials, two-factor authentication codes, and sensitive personal information. Security researchers linked the malware distribution campaign to broader banking fraud operations targeting users across India.
The platform confirmed it had identified and removed dozens of such advertisements as part of its ongoing efforts to combat financially motivated scams. Meta's enforcement teams worked to disable associated accounts and prevent perpetrators from creating replacement ads using similar tactics. The company stated it continues monitoring for related malicious activity across its network.
Financial institutions and cybersecurity experts have increasingly warned Indian consumers about the sophistication of mobile banking fraud schemes. Users are advised to download applications only from official app stores, verify developer credentials, and exercise caution with unsolicited downloads promoted through social media advertisements. Banking authorities recommend users enable additional security measures and report suspicious activity to their financial institutions immediately.
