The Department of Meteorology issued an alert on Wednesday cautioning residents across multiple districts of the potential for severe lightning activity. The warning covers several provinces and is expected to remain in effect through the coming days as weather patterns bring thunderstorm systems across the island.
Metereological officials recommend that people remain indoors during periods of electrical storm activity and avoid open areas, tall structures, and water bodies where lightning strike risks are elevated. The advisory particularly cautions outdoor workers, farmers, and fishermen to suspend activities when thunder is audible or dark storm clouds are visible.
Electricity distribution authorities have also been notified to monitor power infrastructure in affected regions. Residents are urged to disconnect electrical appliances during storms and refrain from using landline telephones while lightning activity persists in their vicinity.
The department continues to monitor atmospheric conditions and will issue updates as the weather situation develops. Additional precautions including the securing of loose outdoor items and ensuring adequate drainage are recommended as heavy rainfall may accompany the thunderstorms.
