The Meteorology Department has issued a weather alert as atmospheric conditions associated with El Niño phenomena show signs of intensifying in the region. The development could lead to above-normal precipitation across parts of the island during the final two months of 2024, increasing risks of flooding in vulnerable areas.
El Niño conditions, characterized by warming ocean temperatures in the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions, significantly influence rainfall patterns across South and Southeast Asia. When such conditions align with Sri Lanka's monsoon seasons, they can amplify precipitation levels and create hazardous weather situations.
