Meteorology Department Issues Amber Alert for Severe Lightning Across Island

The Department of Meteorology issued the amber advisory at 11:00 am on Wednesday, flagging heightened risk of severe lightning and thundershowers across a broad swathe of the country. The alert encompasses the North-central, Eastern, Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, along with Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Gampaha, Colombo and Kurunegala districts.

Residents and outdoor workers in the affected areas have been advised to exercise caution as thundershowers accompanied by intense lightning strikes are forecast during the advisory period. The amber classification indicates a potentially dangerous weather situation requiring heightened awareness and preparedness.

The 24-hour advisory period is expected to expire Thursday morning. The Department of Meteorology typically issues such alerts to enable the public and relevant authorities to take preventive measures, including seeking shelter and securing loose outdoor items that could be affected by severe weather conditions.
