The Department of Meteorology has forecast heavy showers across several provinces as a low-pressure area develops over the southeastern Bay of Bengal. The weather system is anticipated to intensify rainfall patterns island-wide, affecting both land and surrounding sea areas.
Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and Southern provinces face the heaviest precipitation, with rainfall expected to reach between 100 and 150 millimetres at certain locations. Other regions across the island are likely to experience showers exceeding 75 millimetres, indicating widespread wet conditions.
The alert was issued by the Department of Meteorology at 05:30 a.m. on 13 October 2026. Residents and authorities in affected areas are advised to monitor further updates as the weather system develops throughout the day. The forecast indicates significant moisture transport from the Bay of Bengal will sustain rainfall activity over the deep and shallow waters surrounding the island.
Commuters and outdoor activities are expected to face disruptions due to the anticipated downpours. The meteorological department recommends that residents remain alert to potential flooding and landslide risks in vulnerable areas during the period of heavy rainfall.
