Meteorology Department Issues Severe Lightning Alert for Eastern and Uva Provinces

The Department of Meteorology issued a severe weather advisory on Friday morning warning of intense lightning activity affecting the Uva and Eastern provinces, as well as the Mullaitivu and Polonnaruwa districts. The alert, released at 10:30 a.m., will remain valid until 11:30 p.m., covering a 13-hour period of heightened risk.
Forecasters indicate that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are expected to develop across the affected areas during the advisory period. Residents in these districts are urged to exercise caution and take appropriate precautions as electrical storm activity intensifies.
The Department of Meteorology regularly issues such advisories to alert the public to potentially hazardous weather conditions. Residents are advised to avoid outdoor activities during peak thunderstorm hours and to remain indoors when lightning activity is heaviest. The advisory underscores the importance of weather awareness during the monsoon season in Sri Lanka's eastern and south-central regions.
