Metro Cebu air quality crisis widens as more cities suspend classes

Multiple local government units across Metro Cebu have suspended face-to-face classes as air pollution levels plummeted to dangerous levels. The deterioration is being driven primarily by local sources including vehicle emissions and industrial pollution rather than transboundary haze.

CEBU CITY — Several local government units in the Metro Cebu region suspended in-person classes on Monday, October 12, as air quality conditions deteriorated sharply to "very unhealthy" levels across a wider geographic area.

The expansion of poor air quality marks a significant shift from previous pollution episodes affecting the region. Unlike earlier instances when transboundary haze from forest and peat fires in Indonesia's Kalimantan province contributed substantially to air pollution, current conditions are being driven primarily by local emission sources.

Vehicle emissions and industrial pollution have been identified as the primary culprits in the recent air quality degradation. The concentration of these localized pollutants has reached levels deemed hazardous to public health, prompting education officials to move classroom instruction online to protect students and teachers.

The suspension of classes represents an increasing concern among local authorities regarding air quality management and pollution control within the metropolitan area. Officials have not yet announced specific measures or timelines for resuming normal school operations.
