Metro Manila air quality poses risks for vulnerable residents

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources warned that air quality in several Metro Manila areas has reached unhealthy levels for people with respiratory sensitivities. Fine particulate matter concentrations remain elevated across parts of the capital region.

The Environmental Management Bureau, the DENR's regulatory arm, reported on Thursday that fine particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter—commonly referred to as PM2.5—had reached concerning levels in multiple locations across Metro Manila. The pollutant concentration crossed thresholds classified as unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, elderly persons, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.

PM2.5 particles are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, posing particular health risks to vulnerable populations. The DENR's findings underscore ongoing air quality challenges in the metropolitan area, where vehicle emissions, industrial activities, and seasonal atmospheric conditions contribute to pollution levels.

Health officials have advised residents in affected areas to limit outdoor activities and use protective masks when necessary. The DENR continues to monitor air quality across Metro Manila and is expected to provide regular updates on atmospheric conditions affecting the region.
