Metro riders question fate of unspent smart card balances amid NCMC rollout

Commuters using Bengaluru Metro's smart card system have begun voicing concerns about the status of their unused account balances as the transport authority accelerates its shift toward the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) standard. The transition, aimed at enabling seamless travel across multiple transit modes and cities, has left many riders uncertain about the fate of their existing prepaid amounts.

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited has promoted NCMC adoption as a modernization measure that would allow passengers to use a single card across metros, buses, and other transport networks in compliance with national standards. However, the accelerated rollout has coincided with growing questions from cardholders regarding whether their current balances will be automatically transferred, refunded, or forfeited in the transition process.

Transport authorities have indicated that detailed guidelines on balance migration will be communicated to stakeholders before the legacy system is phased out entirely. The corporation has urged commuters to clarify their card status and initiate transfers or claim refunds through designated channels to avoid losing their funds.

Industry observers note that the transition reflects India's broader push toward interoperable payment systems in public transport. Similar concerns have emerged in other metropolitan areas undertaking the NCMC migration, prompting regulators to mandate clear consumer communication protocols and grace periods for balance settlements before full system changeover.
