Mettur Dam Water Release Begins; Questions Remain on Sustainability

Water release from Mettur Dam commenced Tuesday following the Chief Minister's formal inauguration of the operation. The dam's current storage stood at 54.45 thousand million cubic feet (tmc ft), with water levels at 91.56 feet against the reservoir's full capacity of 120 feet and total storage capacity of 93.47 tmc ft.

The opening of the sluice gates marks a significant moment for farmers and residents across the region who depend on the dam for irrigation and water supply. Mettur, one of Tamil Nadu's major water infrastructure projects, serves as a critical resource during the dry months, particularly for agricultural activities in the command area.

However, the timing of the water release has raised questions about how long current storage levels can sustain the discharge. While the dam holds approximately 58 percent of its total capacity, officials will need to manage the release carefully to balance immediate irrigation requirements against the possibility of prolonged drought conditions.

The reservoir's water level trajectory in coming weeks will determine whether the release can be maintained at current rates or if restrictions become necessary.
