MFIN to roll out PAN, CKYC norms for microfinance sector

The Microfinance Institutions Network (MFIN) is moving to standardize borrower identification practices across India's microfinance industry by mandating the use of PAN and CKYC records among lenders.

The industry body will release comprehensive guidelines within 10-15 days that encourage microfinance lenders to incorporate Permanent Account Number and Know Your Customer (CKYC) documentation into their lending protocols. The initiative seeks to establish uniform standards for credit underwriting and borrower verification across the sector.

MFIN has set an aspirational 18-month timeline for lenders to adopt these identification requirements. The move is expected to enhance due diligence processes and reduce credit risk by ensuring more robust customer profiling and verification mechanisms.

The guidelines represent MFIN's commitment to strengthening governance standards within the microfinance sector, which serves millions of low-income borrowers across the country. By promoting uniform adoption of PAN and CKYC documentation, the industry body aims to create a more transparent and accountable lending ecosystem.

The announcement comes as regulators and industry stakeholders continue to emphasize the importance of stringent borrower identification practices in the microfinance space. The guidelines are expected to provide clarity to member institutions on implementation requirements and timelines.
