Michigan Farm's Doorstop Revealed as Previously Unknown Iron Meteorite

The meteorite was unearthed on a Michigan farm in 1939, but its cosmic origins went unrecognised for nearly eight decades. Instead of being studied, the rock was repurposed as a practical doorstop for a barn, where it remained largely unremarkable in the eyes of successive owners.

The significance of the specimen came to light in 2018, following the fall of another meteorite in the region. The subsequent owners, prompted by the recent event, decided to investigate whether their long-held doorstop might have similar extraterrestrial origins. Their hunch proved correct.

Central Michigan University conducted a comprehensive analysis of the rock and confirmed it as a previously unknown IIIAB iron meteorite. The classification places it in a specific category of iron meteorites characterised by their composition and crystalline structure, providing researchers with fresh data about meteorite diversity and distribution.

The discovery underscores the importance of personal collections and casual finds in advancing planetary science. Many significant meteorite specimens have been identified long after their initial discovery, often through the curiosity and diligence of amateur collectors and landowners who recognise the scientific value hidden within ordinary rocks.
