Micron Technology shares retreated 4% in recent trading even as Baird, a major investment research firm, raised its price target on the chipmaker to $1,520 from $1,280—signalling potential gains of around 40% from current levels.
The upgrade reflects growing confidence in Micron's ability to capitalize on accelerating demand for artificial intelligence-related semiconductor products. Baird highlighted three key drivers: robust demand for AI applications, tightening supplies of memory chips in the market, and expanding profit margins in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) segment where Micron competes.
HBM chips are critical components in AI servers and data centres, and their production remains constrained even as technology companies race to expand their AI infrastructure. The supply tightness has allowed chipmakers to command premium pricing, improving unit economics across the sector.
The stock's 4% decline despite the positive analyst commentary underscores the volatile sentiment around semiconductor equities, which have experienced sharp swings amid concerns about valuation levels and broader macroeconomic conditions. Investors often view dips in fundamentally strong companies as buying opportunities, though near-term price movements remain subject to wider market dynamics.
Micron's performance will be closely watched by market participants tracking the semiconductor industry's ability to meet global demand for AI infrastructure components.
