Micron to significantly expand India chip assembly operations in 2026
Memory chip manufacturer Micron Technology plans to substantially scale up its semiconductor assembly and testing facility in India next year, marking a major vote of confidence in the country's advancing semiconductor ecosystem. Micron Technology will substantially expand its semiconductor assembly and testing operations in India during 2026, CEO Sanjay Mehrotra announced Thursday at the SEMICON India 2026 conference in New Delhi.
Mehrotra highlighted India's shift from long-standing ambitions to tangible semiconductor manufacturing execution. "For decades, people have discussed India's semiconductor potential. What I see today is execution," he said, crediting the government's semiconductor policy framework for establishing the necessary industrial foundation.
The company, which began commercial production at its Sanand facility in Gujarat earlier this year, operates India's first semiconductor assembly and test facility established under the national semiconductor mission. Micron currently employs over 7,000 people directly in India, with indirect employment across the broader value chain extending to tens of thousands more workers.
The Sanand facility now produces finished DRAM and NAND memory products for commercial use. The planned expansion represents Micron's deepening commitment to India's electronics manufacturing sector and addresses the nation's push for semiconductor self-sufficiency.
