MARAWI CITY — Government forces held a solemn ceremony Saturday to mark nine years since the liberation of Marawi City from Islamic State-affiliated extremists, honoring the military and police personnel who lost their lives in the protracted conflict. The 103rd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army conducted a 21-gun salute in tribute to the fallen, underscoring the heavy toll exacted during the siege. Presidential Adviser for Marawi Rehabilitation and Development Nasser Pangandaman Jr. led the commemoration, which took place as the city continues its rebuilding efforts. The Marawi siege, which lasted several months in 2017, was one of the most significant terrorist incidents in Philippine history, prompting a major military operation to retake the Muslim-majority city. The annual observance serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by security personnel and the ongoing commitment to regional stability in Mindanao.
