Military May Revisit Marriage Rules for Extended Agniveers Service

Defence officials have begun examining marriage and family-related regulations for Agniveers recruited under the government's Agnipath military recruitment scheme, following recent decisions to extend their service tenure.

Under current military regulations, recruits are prohibited from marriage during the first four years of service. However, with the recent approval of a two-year service extension for Agniveers, bringing their total potential tenure to six years, questions have emerged about whether these longstanding rules require updating.

The Agnipath scheme, launched in 2022, allows for short-term military recruitment with initial four-year contracts followed by optional extensions. As the scheme evolves and more recruits serve under extended timelines, personnel management authorities are reportedly considering whether marriage restrictions—traditionally designed for shorter service commitments—remain appropriate for longer deployment periods.

Military officials have not yet announced formal changes to existing regulations. The review reflects broader discussions within defence circles about adapting service conditions to accommodate the scheme's modified structure and recruit expectations.

The outcome of these deliberations could significantly impact career planning for the thousands of Agniveers currently serving or preparing to join the armed forces under the revised framework.
