Military powers race to develop humanoid robots for combat roles

Humanoid robots have moved beyond laboratory settings into competitive sporting events, where they continue to break performance records in speed, agility and coordination. These advances in robotics technology have not gone unnoticed by military strategists and defence contractors, who are investing heavily in adapting the technology for combat and tactical operations.

Development programmes across multiple nations are testing humanoid robots in simulated military scenarios and operational environments. Proponents argue the machines could reduce casualties among personnel by undertaking dangerous missions, operating in hazardous conditions, and performing tasks that would be difficult or impossible for human soldiers.

However, the acceleration of military robotics development has prompted concern among technology experts and defence analysts about the implications for international security.
