TACLOBAN CITY — The Armed Forces of the Philippines has launched intensified operations against an estimated 40 communist New People's Army (NPA) members active in Northern Samar, military officials said Monday.

The renewed offensive follows multiple reports from residents documenting armed rebel presence and alleged group gatherings in remote, mountainous communities across the province. Security forces have concentrated efforts on geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas where the insurgent group has maintained a presence.

The campaign represents a continuation of government counterinsurgency efforts that have targeted NPA operations throughout the region. Military commanders have characterized the remaining rebel force as significantly weakened compared to previous decades, though ongoing operations indicate the group retains capability to conduct activities in hard-to-access terrain.

Northern Samar has historically served as a stronghold for NPA operations in the Eastern Visayas region. Local government units have been coordinated with military forces to gather intelligence and identify rebel movements in communities across the province.
