Military Spokesman Announces IMEI Registration Requirement for Imported Mobile Phones

Major General Zaw Min Tun, Leader of the Tatmadaw Information Team, announced new requirements for mobile phone importers during a press conference on 19 May. Under the forthcoming regulations, all imported mobile phones must have their International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers registered with authorities.

The IMEI is a unique 15-digit code that identifies individual mobile devices and is used globally for tracking and authentication purposes. The military spokesman stated that the registration system aims to address tax evasion related to mobile phone imports.

According to Major General Zaw Min Tun, the new measure is designed to close gaps in revenue collection from the mobile phone trade. Implementation of the IMEI registration requirement is expected to begin in the coming period, though specific timeline details were not provided during the briefing.
