Milk Price Surge Set to Inflate Tea, Coffee Costs Across India

Milk price increases announced by state authorities are poised to drive up the cost of everyday beverages for Indian consumers, with tea and coffee prices expected to rise by around ₹5 in the coming period.

The latest milk price hike of ₹8 per litre represents a significant jump in dairy costs. This follows an earlier ₹4 per litre increase that took effect on April 1, 2025, compounding affordability concerns for households across the country.

State governments had previously adjusted milk prices in June 2024, when rates were increased by ₹2 per litre. That adjustment was accompanied by a reduction in packet sizes, with 500 ml packets being reduced by 50 ml, effectively raising per-unit costs for consumers.

The cumulative effect of these successive price adjustments threatens to burden consumers already grappling with inflation. Tea and coffee vendors, who rely heavily on milk as a key ingredient, are expected to pass on these increased costs to customers, potentially reducing consumption in price-sensitive markets.

Industry analysts note that dairy price movements remain a critical indicator of retail inflation in India, with ripple effects extending across food services and hospitality sectors dependent on milk-based products.
