Police in the Mimaropa region have accounted for 216 illegally-held firearms since May, authorities said, as law enforcement steps up efforts to combat unlicensed weapons ahead of the Undas observance.
Police Brig. Gen. Christopher R. Dela Cruz, the Mimaropa regional police director, ordered the intensified operations targeting illegal gun possession and firearm-related crimes. The directive was issued on October 27 as the region prepares for the All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day holiday period, when Filipinos traditionally visit cemeteries and families gather in large groups.
The firearms recovery operation reflects concerns about gun violence during major holidays in the Philippines. Authorities have linked loose and unregistered weapons to criminal activity and accidental shootings during peak gathering periods.
The regional police have not disclosed specific details about where the firearms were recovered or how many arrests were made in connection with the illegal weapons. The operation continues as police maintain heightened alert levels throughout the region during the Undas season.
