MANILA — The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency has named a politician from Mindanao as the person who bankrolled a chartered flight connected to the confiscation of 521 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine in neighboring Laos, according to the agency's latest findings in the ongoing drug trafficking investigation.
The allegation surfaced as part of a widening probe into the smuggling operation. Court testimony from a witness has also suggested that a bag containing undisclosed items was purportedly sent to at least two sitting senators, including Vicente Sotto III and Stella Quimbo, though details regarding the nature and contents of the alleged delivery remain unclear.
Authorities have been investigating the international drug shipment since its discovery, with the probe expanding to include potential links to Philippine officials and financiers. The case represents one of the largest suspected methamphetamine seizures in recent regional operations and has drawn scrutiny toward possible high-level involvement in drug trafficking networks.
The investigation continues as prosecutors examine evidence and witness testimonies to determine the full extent of involvement by various parties. Authorities have not yet made formal charges in connection with the allegations against the identified politician and the senators mentioned in the proceedings.
