MANILA — The Philippine National Police said Friday that a politician from Mindanao suspected of bankrolling a drug operation has previous involvement in illegal drug cases. The suspect allegedly financed the chartered flight connected to the seizure of 521 kilograms of methamphetamine in Laos, authorities said.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency had earlier identified the financier as someone operating from the Mindanao region. The drug shipment was intercepted during operations targeting international narcotics trafficking networks.

PNP officials indicated that the politician's history of drug-related cases strengthens investigative leads into the current operation. Details regarding the nature and timeline of the suspect's prior involvement were not immediately disclosed.

The case marks another significant drug seizure involving Philippine-based operators attempting to move illegal substances across Southeast Asia. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing to identify other individuals involved in the smuggling operation.
