Mindanao power grid faces multiple alerts as demand strains supply

The Mindanao grid operated under critical red alert status twice during Wednesday, with the most severe conditions occurring from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and again from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., according to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).
The alerts were triggered by a mismatch between power supply and consumer demand during peak usage hours. Red alerts indicate the grid is operating with minimal reserve capacity and vulnerable to potential blackouts, while yellow alerts signal tighter-than-normal operating conditions.
The recurring alerts underscore ongoing challenges facing Mindanao's power infrastructure as the region continues to grapple with meeting growing energy demands. Power supply constraints have periodically disrupted operations across the island, affecting both households and businesses.
The NGCP manages the country's high-voltage transmission network and coordinates with power generation companies and distribution utilities to balance electricity supply and demand across different regions.
