CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — Oriental Mindoro National High School (OMNHS), the largest public secondary institution on Mindoro Island, is taking proactive steps to safeguard its water supply as El Niño conditions threaten the region's water availability.

The school administration has begun identifying and developing additional water sources while rolling out conservation initiatives to ensure uninterrupted access for its student body of more than 6,000, according to Arlan Bolasco, OMNHS assistant principal for operations and learner support.

The measures come as Philippine meteorological agencies warn of drier conditions expected across the archipelago during the El Niño season, which typically reduces rainfall and stresses existing water infrastructure in schools and communities.

Other educational institutions in Oriental Mindoro have begun similar preparatory efforts, recognizing the critical importance of reliable water access for maintaining daily school operations and sanitation standards. Officials have urged students and staff to practice water-saving habits in anticipation of potential supply constraints.
