CALAPAN CITY — Sablayan municipality is seeking intervention from the Department of Public Works and Highways following extensive flooding that inflicted P1.43 billion in damages across the Occidental Mindoro town.
Municipal Administrator Norman Novio disclosed on Sunday that consecutive weather disturbances brought heavy rainfall and elevated river discharge levels, overwhelming existing flood management structures. The extent of damage has prompted local officials to prioritize infrastructure repairs and upgrades to prevent similar disasters in future.
The request focuses on rehabilitating and reinforcing flood control systems and riverbank protection structures that deteriorated under the strain of successive storms. Officials believe upgraded infrastructure would better protect residents and property from repeated inundation.
The damage assessment underscores ongoing vulnerabilities in Sablayan's flood management capacity, particularly during monsoon seasons when heavy precipitation and river swelling pose significant risks to communities. The municipality's appeal reflects growing concerns about climate-related hazards affecting Mindoro communities.
