Minimum wage workers in two Philippine regions to see pay raises

Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino announced Tuesday that minimum wage earners in Western Visayas and Soccsksargen will benefit from the new wage orders, which take effect on November 19. The increases, approved after consultations between labor officials and stakeholders, will add up to P45 to daily wages depending on the sector and location.

The National Wages and Productivity Commission greenlighted the adjustments following a process that involved discussions with employers, workers, and other interested parties. The move addresses calls from labor groups for better compensation amid ongoing inflationary pressures affecting household budgets across the country.

These wage increases apply to employees earning the minimum wage in both regions, with variations possible based on industry classifications and enterprise size. The timing of the adjustment coincides with efforts by the labor department to implement wage orders in different parts of the Philippines on a staggered schedule.

The wage hikes represent part of the government's broader strategy to improve workers' purchasing power and living standards. Officials have indicated that additional wage orders may be considered for other regions in the coming months as economic conditions and productivity metrics are reviewed.
