Minister slams cyberbullying of student over Najib donation query

KUALA LUMPUR — The student, identified as Ummi, faced a wave of cyberbullying and threatening messages after publicly questioning the source and handling of donations linked to Najib's financial penalty.

Fahmi expressed concern over the incident, characterising the online attacks as unacceptable and contrary to principles of respectful public discourse. He stressed that raising questions about matters of public interest should not invite intimidation or threats.

The minister's statement underscores growing concerns about online harassment in Malaysia, particularly when individuals engage in civic participation or public commentary. Authorities have previously warned that cyberbullying and threats violate existing laws and can result in prosecution.

The incident highlights the tension between free expression and online conduct, as Malaysians increasingly use social media to discuss matters affecting the nation. Legal experts have noted that while criticism is protected, harassment and threats cross legal boundaries.

Fahmi's intervention signals the government's position that such conduct should be investigated and addressed, while encouraging citizens to engage in substantive dialogue on public issues without resorting to abuse or intimidation.
