Minister urges eco-friendly clay idols for upcoming Ganesh festival

With the Ganesh Chaturthi festival approaching, a senior minister has urged citizens to opt for clay idols made from natural, biodegradable materials in place of those crafted from non-eco-friendly substances. The appeal forms part of ongoing efforts to minimise the environmental impact of major religious celebrations observed across the region.

The use of conventional idol-making materials has long raised environmental concerns, particularly during the immersion phase when non-biodegradable substances contaminate water bodies and cause ecological damage. Authorities have increasingly promoted alternatives that dissolve naturally without harming aquatic ecosystems or soil quality.

Traditional clay idols, often prepared by local artisans using locally-sourced earth, have been identified as a sustainable option that maintains cultural authenticity while addressing environmental challenges. Such idols dissolve harmlessly when immersed in water bodies, leaving no chemical residue or pollution.
